Psychosocial Risk Management Tool
The Psychosocial Risk Management Tool is a practical resource developed by the Mandala Foundation to assist aid workers and managers to identify and manage the diverse range of psychosocial risks associated with field assignments or deployments. We are pleased to be able to provide ongoing access to this valuable resource via our resources hub.
The Risk Tool is designed to be used by both expatriate and international staff and is available in seven different languages in either online or hard copy format.
It provides a comprehensive inventory of psychosocial risk factors (stressors) encountered by humanitarian aid staff in their work. It allows organisations and individuals to identify the psychosocial risks which are likely to be most prevalent on an assignment, to assess the impact of these risks, and to design a comprehensive psychosocial risk management plan in response.
Watch the instructional video for an overview of the Risk Tool, or continue reading below.
Both online and hard copy versions of the Risk Tool are available in seven different languages: English, Arabic, Bahasa Indonesian, Bislama, Chinese, Tetum and Tok Pisin.

Contexts of Psychosocial Risk
The Risk Tool is designed to capture the multiple layers and complexity of sressors across seven key contexts or domains of humanitarian aid and development work:
- Field Environment
- Organisational Culture
- Management Style & Approaches
- Project Design
- Workplace Conditions
- Living Conditions
- Team Dynamics
Within each context, there is a comprehensive pool of potential psychosocial stressors relevant to humanitarian and development work. Each of the stressors is individually numbered.
Uses of the Psychosocial Risk Management Tool
The Risk Tool can be used by:
- Organisations to systematically screen specific assignment or project stressors in order to plan risk management strategies
- Managers to assist in the design of appropriate recruitment and assignment criteria as well as to tailor briefing, training, monitoring and debriefing activity
- Assignees to assess their understanding of the risks involved in a particular assignment and to consider the anticipated impact of stressors on their wellbeing
- Psychosocial Support Roles to assist organisations, managers and assignees to assess risks and develop appropriate management and self-care plans
The Psychosocial Risk Management Tool encourages consultative dialogue, planning and monitoring between managers, assignees and teams. It is recommended that organisations consult with Mandala Staff Support (as authorised administators of the Risk Tool) and undertake training to determine how the Risk Tool can best be integrated into existing risk management and other Occupational Health and Safety practices.
How does the Psychosocial Risk Management Tool relate to the Guidelines for Managing Psychosocial Risk?
The Risk Tool can be used independently or in conjunction with the Guidelines for Managing Psychosocial Risk to systematise the psychosocial support of assignees across the assignment cycle.
Use of the Risk Tool can also be combined with individual psychosocial screening and/or psychological assessment to further enhance the risk management process for staff and volunteers.
The Risk Tool can be used at the pre-deployment, in-field or post-deployment phase of an assignment. Training and advice for managers on how the Risk Tool can be integrated into existing organisational systems is also available from Mandala Staff Support (as authorised administrators of the Risk Tool).
